Nevada Lawmakers Approve Plan To Mail Ballots To All Voters, Amid Opposition From President Trump

In States, Voting On
- Updated

Nevada state lawmakers have approved a plan to mail ballots to all active voters in November, a move already deemed “outrageous” by President Trump.

Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) is expected to sign the bill, which was passed by the Democratic majority in Nevada’s legislature during a special session on Sunday afternoon, the Associated Press reported. Doing so will make Nevada one of seven states that will allow all registered voters to vote by mail in the general election.

Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that voting by mail will lead to widespread fraud, while Democrats and many advocacy groups say it’s the only way to ensure that people can safely make their voices heard during the pandemic. Over the weekend, former Nevada attorney general Adam Laxalt, a Republican and Trump’s Nevada campaign chair, claimed that Nevada Democrats were “working to steal our election” by “ramming through” plans to allow all voters to cast their votes by mail. Trump retweeted the accusation early Sunday, adding, “This is outrageous. Must be met with immediate litigation!”

GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel echoed the unsubstantiated claims of fraud on Sunday, adding, “The RNC will continue to challenge and fight this assault on our Democracy.”

Noting that both Laxalt and Trump have voted by mail in the past, the Nevada State Democratic Party called the attacks “hypocritical” and said in statement that the party “will do the necessary work to ensure every eligible voter can participate easily and safely in what will surely be the most important election in a lifetime.”
